Preaching on Hell

I have just read a wonderful sermon by Tim Keller on the subject of Hell. In it he suggests that far from being a problem for those who believe in a loving God, the doctrine of Hell is actually a really helpful one. It helps us to understand our hearts, to live at peace in the world, and to know the love of God. Big claims? Have a read and come to your own conclusions…

Life of Jesus for the iPhone

A friend of mine has recently produced an iPhone app which is a comic strip version of the life of Jesus. With it he aims to improve biblical literacy among visual learners. I don’t have an iPhone so haven’t been able to try it out, but you can find out more at theJesuscomic.com or just search for ‘Jesus comic’ on the iTunes store. Mark Meynell obviously does have an iPhone and has reviewed it briefly!

Content when life is hard

I had the daunting privilege of preaching on this subject last night. I will post an audio link when it is available, but in the meantime, here is a wonderful and very moving set of interviews with a good friend of mine who has a wonderful testimony of God’s comfort through the pain of losing her husband to cancer.

We are very excited by the prospect of the Passion for Life mission next year and hope you and your church are getting ready for it.

They have produced a number of useful ‘apologetic’ videos on different subjects – all of which are available here.

They include topics such as, suffering/evil, science and Christianity, reliability of the Bible etc. The speakers include folk like Don Carson, Paul Williams, Ro Moody, Andrew Sach and John Dickson.

They could be useful to show in services or in other outreach contexts. Highly recommended!

I have heard good things about the Living Leadership project, which hosts an annual conference for those in pastoral ministry, focusing on their own spiritual refreshment – something too easily neglected in the busyness of ministry. And they have very generously made all their conference talks from the last few years available online. A great resource.

I’ve been having a look this morning at an interesting campaign from the Evangelical Alliance called Simplify. It’s a great and a timely call to the discipleship Jesus taught – and more relevant than ever in a time of Credit Crunch. Do have a look. There is a free download of a very helpful chapter from John Ortberg’s book When the Game Is Over, It All Goes Back in the Box which is well worth a read.
