Daily Bible reading resource

One of the things I find most helpful in the Christian life is making regular time to read the Bible and pray. At different times in my life I have found that harder and easier, and I have taken different approaches to help me approach the Scriptures in particular. Sometimes I use a set of Bible reading notes, sometimes a commentary, sometimes a daily devotional based on the writings of a particular Christian author, sometimes I prefer just to reflect on the text myself.

A resource I have found extremely helpful is Don Carson’s For the Love of God. This is based on the McCheyne reading scheme and so gets you once through the Old Testament and twice through the New Testament in a year. I recently discovered that it is ‘blogged’ so that you can access the resource electronically on your clever i-this or electronic-that. Operation World – updated

For anyone who has not yet seen this, Operation World is a wonderful resource which enables Christians to pray in a more informed way for many countries around the world. It contains detailed statistical and historical information which really aids prayer.

In addition to publishing a new edition of this great book (end of last year – this isn’t new news!) I am pleased to note that the website has also had a thorough overhaul. Basic information on the different countries is now available online (hurrah!) – which is very useful for last-minute prayer writing (ahem!). Could be a great resource for youth groups as well as for service leaders.

Preaching on Hell

I have just read a wonderful sermon by Tim Keller on the subject of Hell. In it he suggests that far from being a problem for those who believe in a loving God, the doctrine of Hell is actually a really helpful one. It helps us to understand our hearts, to live at peace in the world, and to know the love of God. Big claims? Have a read and come to your own conclusions…

Life of Jesus for the iPhone

A friend of mine has recently produced an iPhone app which is a comic strip version of the life of Jesus. With it he aims to improve biblical literacy among visual learners. I don’t have an iPhone so haven’t been able to try it out, but you can find out more at theJesuscomic.com or just search for ‘Jesus comic’ on the iTunes store. Mark Meynell obviously does have an iPhone and has reviewed it briefly!

Content when life is hard

I had the daunting privilege of preaching on this subject last night. I will post an audio link when it is available, but in the meantime, here is a wonderful and very moving set of interviews with a good friend of mine who has a wonderful testimony of God’s comfort through the pain of losing her husband to cancer.

We are very excited by the prospect of the Passion for Life mission next year and hope you and your church are getting ready for it.

They have produced a number of useful ‘apologetic’ videos on different subjects – all of which are available here.

They include topics such as, suffering/evil, science and Christianity, reliability of the Bible etc. The speakers include folk like Don Carson, Paul Williams, Ro Moody, Andrew Sach and John Dickson.

They could be useful to show in services or in other outreach contexts. Highly recommended!
