Building a Library
TheVirtualWord believe that good Christian books can be really helpful in applying the teaching of the Bible to your life. Below will be a short list of books that we have found helpful and some suggested translations of the Bible. We will be adding to this as time permits. Please be patient!
What I’m reading at the moment…
| Mark Dever has written a very interesting book on principles of church government. | Yes it is taking me a long time… |
Some Commentaries
|
Dale Ralph Davis has written some really EXCELLENT commentaries on the Old Testament narratives. He deals in a wonderfully pastoral and theologically insightful way with these under-preached books of the Bible. More books by Dale Ralph Davis |
A short but utterly brilliant exposition of Philippians with really helpful application. Written by a great scholar but in a very readable style. Recommended for devotional reading as well as help in sermon preparation. More books by Don Carson |

Some Bibles
| The English Standard Version is a recent version of the Bible which seeks to adopt a very literal approach to translation. It is a very helpful addition for study, although the English can sometimes feel a little heavy. It is now published in loads of sizes, materials and with varying cross references - see link. The New Living Translation is further along the ‘paraphrase’ spectrum, and can be really helpful for bringing some passages of the Bible which are culturally removed from us to life. If you like this translation, you may also enjoy The Message More editions of the NLT |
